The first flag of Taiwan was created on 25 May 1895, after Treaty of Shimonoseki. Though Taiwan was the first independent state of Asia, Japanese empire invaded northern Taiwan on 29 May, 1895 with 12,000 troops. Brief independence of Taiwan ended when Japanese forces occupied its southern capital, Tainan, on 21 October, 1895.
