The AFDD was organized from when the families of disappeared people visited the el Comit Pro-Paz (Committee of Pro-Peace) to proceed the legal procedure. It is officially formed in 1975. Its activities are mostly centered on the demand:
- that the truth be told about the fate and whereabouts of the disappeared
- that those found responsible for forced disappearances be tried and sentenced for their deeds.
The AFDD also works to foster the recovery of historic memory in Chile as well as the individual testimonies describing the events leading up to the disappearances of their loved ones. The AFDD publishes the monthly newsletter Informativo (report) and has chronicled its story in the book, "Twenty years of the AFDD's struggle" (Un camino de iimagenes: 20 anos de Lucha de la AFDD) published in 1997.
