International North America Native American Movement Overview of Indian Movement
Red Power! £¦ AIM
In the early 1960's, Indians marked a historical turning point in its struggle toward ending the Indian removal policy. At the same time, they began to ask for self-determination in a firm voice. Starting with demonstrations in Chicago in 1961, organizations were formed and campaigns were conducted with the participation of mostly young, college-educated people. They exerted themselves in order to instill ethnic pride in Indians. The Indian movement, which began in the 1960's, formed an axis of modern Indian civil rights movement.
As a result, Red Power's assertion that the white community recognize the right of Indians to determine their destiny and honor the Indians' rights stipulated in treaties received support from many traditionalists living in reservations. Indians' resistance movement reached its peak when the American Indian Movement (AIM) was founded in Minneapolis in 1968 for Indians' self-determination.
